The Draft Liturgies of the Global Methodist Church
Sacrament of Holy Communion II
Abbreviated Liturgy
October 2026
Congregation responses are in bold.
INVITATION, CONFESSION, AND PARDON
Celebrant:
All you who repent of your sins,
who live in love and peace with your neighbors,
and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God
and walking in his holy ways; draw near with faith,
and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort;
and make your humble confession before Almighty God:
Congregation:
Almighty God, Maker of all things, Judge of all people,
we confess that we have sinned against you
by our thoughts, words, and deeds.
Have mercy upon us, Merciful Father;
forgive us all that is past and renew us to freely love
and serve you in joyful obedience;
to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
-Silence for individual confession-
Hear these words: For God so loved the world
that he gave his only Son that all who believe in him
will not perish but have eternal life.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
All praise and glory to God. Amen!
THE PRAYER OF GREAT THANKSGIVING
(The congregation is invited to stand for the Prayer of Great Thanksgiving.)
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him our thanks and praise.
It is right and good at all times and in all places
to give you highest thanks and praise
O Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God,
Maker of all things, visible and invisible.
Therefore we join with the angels and archangels
and all the company of heaven surrounding the
throne to magnify your Holy Name, saying:
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Holy are you, and holy is your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ.
Through his incarnation, suffering, death, resurrection,
and ascension he freed us from the bondage of sin and death
and is seated at your right hand in glory.
We praise you that he instituted this heavenly meal
to receive his body and blood in continual remembrance of his sacrifice
until he comes again.
(Celebrant holds hands, palms down over the bread and cup during the consecration.)
On the night in which he gave himself up for us,
he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread,
gave it to his disciples, and said:
"Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me."
When the supper was over, he took the cup,
gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said:
"Drink from this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
shed for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of me."
As so, we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
(Celebrant holds palms face down over the elements.)
Pour out your Holy Spirit to sanctify these gifts
of bread and fruit of the vine to be
for your people
the body and blood of Christ.
Pour out your Spirit to sanctify us as well,
that we, who receive by faith,
may be partakers of his blessed body and blood.
By your Spirit make us one body,
your people from every tribe, tongue, and nation,
until we join the church triumphant in praise
surrounding the heavenly banquet table in the world to come.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ:
By him, and with him, and in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father,
now and for ever. Amen.
THE LORD鈥橲 PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.
BREAKING THE BREAD
(Celebrant lifts the bread and breaks it and likewise lifts the cup.)
Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
Therefore let us keep the feast.
GIVING THE BREAD AND THE CUP
(Servers are invited to come forward to receive and distribute the consecrated elements to the congregation.)
This is the body of Christ given for you.
This is the blood of Christ shed for you.
(Following the distribution of the elements the servers return them to the celebrant at the table.)
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Heavenly Father, we thank you for nourishing us
by the living presence of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Now as members of your body and heirs of your
eternal Kingdom send us out to be a holy and living sacrifice
by the power and presence of your Holy Spirit.
In Christ鈥檚 name we pray. Amen.
